The Seasons

This series started with the tremendous appeal of Peruvian retablos – wooden boxes with brightly colored three dimensional scenes of life and religion for the people of the Peruvian highlands, for whom I felt a great respect and liking during my visits to Cuzco and the surrounding countryside. I own a delightful retablo: a village filled with people playing music and dancing, so vivid that you can practically hear the music pour out when you open the box.
Years later, when I was coming back again to images of the four seasons, it occurred to me that if the canvas paintings were placed behind doors, each one could be opened as the season began or they could all be viewed at once. For practical reasons, I arranged them in two sets of two and a very gifted sculptor and cabinet maker, Brad Rhondenbaugh, created beautifully crafted solid walnut doors and frames for them.
